One of the best aspects of being a homeowner is the beautiful stretch of lawn you can play on with your family and pets. While it may just seem minor, lifelong memories can be made when spending time outdoors. However, when you are crafting those memories, you want a soft, lush, green lawn to enjoy. To achieve this, lawn fertilization, weed control, and lawn aeration are critical outdoor maintenance components that must be addressed.

We at Colonial Lawn & Garden are your trusted provider of professional lawn care services. We’ve helped countless homeowners achieve the property they desire, which is why we are here to help you do the same. Today, we are excited to explain the role of lawn fertilization, weed control, and aeration in maintaining a healthy, green lawn.
Lawn Fertilization: Feeding Your Grass for Optimal Growth
Just like how humans need essential vitamins and nutrients to grow strong and healthy, so does your lawn. Without proper fertilization, your lawn could become weak, discolored, and fall to the mercy of weeds, pests, and diseases.
Lawn fertilization gives your lawn three key nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Combined, these nutrients aid the lawn in growing deep roots, making it more resilient to extreme temperatures and environmental stress.
As a homeowner, you have the choice between organic and synthetic fertilizers, each providing you with unique lawn fertilization benefits. At Colonial Lawn & Garden, we started as an organic company in the 1980s, but because of the difficulty with organic products, customer perception, and the unpleasant smell, we decided to move away to the repeatable and reliable man-made fertilizers. Now, we offer segmented-release synthetic fertilizers. These fertilizers are chemically formulated to provide immediate nutrient availability to your lawn. This, in turn, delivers quick and visible results. They are coated with a polymer that initiates a slow release as water eventually washes the coating away.
The best times of year to apply fertilizer for maximum effectiveness will depend on your specific grass type and environmental conditions. For cool-season turf, it is recommended to fertilize the lawn with between 4- 6 lbs of nitrogen per 1000 square feet per year. At Colonial Lawn & Garden, we spread out those applications of 1lb each over the course of the year, with our economy program of 4 applications and premium program of 6 applications.
Weed Control: Preventing and Eliminating Lawn Weeds
Here in the Tri-Cities, you have likely seen dandelions, crabgrass, clover, mallow, goathead, or even spurge attempting to take over your lawn. When weeds are allowed to grow freely, they sap essential nutrients from your property – nutrients your lawn needs to grow healthy and prevent pest infestation.

For proper weed control, a schedule of pre-emergent in the spring and post-emergent weed control follow-up treatments are essential.
Pre-emergent weed control treatments work by stopping weeds before they have a chance to wreak havoc. Utilizing this treatment coats dormant weed seeds waiting in your lawn with a powerful herbicide that targets the seeds. This, in turn, prevents the weed seeds from sprouting without harming your grass, pets, or children.
For weeds that do manage to break through pre-emergent treatments, that’s where a post-emergent treatment comes in to tackle any errant weeds and keep your lawn looking pristine.
Lawn Aeration: Enhancing Soil Health and Root Growth
Does your lawn see a lot of use? Is it played on, driven on, or walked on frequently? If the answer is yes, eventually, the soil will become compacted. While this is an entirely normal phenomenon, eventually, the soil compaction will distress your lawn and inhibit its ability to grow.
Aeration is a lawn treatment that enhances soil health and root growth. The process of aerating a lawn involves perforating the soil with small holes. These small holes then allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deep into the grassroots, giving it what it needs to grow.
The most common question we get at Colonial Lawn & Garden is how often homeowners should aerate their lawns. The answer lies in how heavily the lawn is used. Lawns with heavy play may need it twice a year. On the other hand, for light-duty lawns, it is recommended every 1-2 years. For lawns that are more for aesthetics than for play, they could go up to a few years without aeration if the lawn is very shaded.
