The First Signs of Lawn Fungus (Before It Becomes a Problem)

Most people think lawn fungus shows up suddenly as rings, patches, or mushrooms, but by the time you see those symptoms it has already been developing beneath the surface. As soil temperatures warm up in late spring and early summer, fungi like fairy ring and necrotic ring spot begin spreading through the soil and root system, often without obvious signs at first.

Early indicators are usually subtle. You may notice slight color differences, areas that look a little darker or duller than the rest of the lawn, or uneven growth where some spots are thriving while others lag behind. Dry areas that do not respond to watering can also point to fairy ring, as the fungus can interfere with how water moves through the soil. In the case of necrotic ring spot, thinning turf is often one of the first signs as roots begin to weaken below the surface.

Catching these issues early makes a significant difference. When addressed at the first signs, treatment is more effective, damage is minimal, and recovery is much faster. Waiting until the problem is clearly visible often means more aggressive treatment and a longer recovery period. If your lawn is starting to look slightly off, even if it is hard to pinpoint why, it is worth taking a closer look before it turns into a larger issue.
