February is here and while we are one month closer to spring (and warm weather!), we are still in the thick of winter. It’s around this time each year where we see the most extreme winter weather, and that can cause a plethora of problems for your trees if precautions are not taken.
Right now your trees are in their most raw form. They are left exposed to the freezing cold temperatures, dry winds, ice, sleet, and whatever else the winter may bring. Protecting and preparing them for the elements is a must. One of the best ways you can do that is by wrapping your trees! Here’s why:
Wrapping Provides Protection
Not only does wrapping provide protection from the elements, it also provides protection from diseases and critters. In fact, critters like deer, rabbits, and insects are one of the biggest threats your trees face during the winter. As mentioned earlier, your trees are already exposed to the elements when they’re bare. These critters can strip the bark, and take essential nutrients from your tree leaving them even MORE exposed than they were before.
Wrapping also protects against diseases like sunscald. This is where the freezing cold temperatures freeze the bark, and is followed by warm temperatures (and warmth from the sun), which causes visible damage to the bark on your trees. Utilizing tree wrap prevents extreme fluctuations in the temperature, ultimately protecting your trees.
Wrapping Reduces Moisture Loss
Your trees have stored moisture and other essential nutrients to ensure survival through the winter months. Any loss of moisture/nutrients can result in significant damage to your trees. By wrapping your trees you are reducing moisture loss, and, as previously mentioned, you are preventing moisture-sucking pests like scale insects and mites from infesting your trees.
Wrapping Protects Against Snow and Ice
A small amount of snow or ice can actually be good for your trees, as it works as a natural insulator. However, too much snow or ice can cause excessive amounts of stress on your tree, and branches can break or split leaving the inside of the tree exposed to the elements. Wrapping your trees keep the branches tucked and insulated, preventing any possibility of damage from the snow or ice.
